WHAT IS HEALTH COACHING
In Health Coaching, we use evidence-based, skillful conversation and clinical interventions to help you actively and safely engage in health behavior change. The goal of health coaching is to help motivate people to cultivate positive health choices. Simply put, a health coach is a highly educated guide in the fields of nutrition, wellness, bio-individuality and mentoring.
Every human body is different, which is why no single diet or fitness plan works for everyone. A health coach helps you find what will work for you specifically. In addition, a health coach works with you to clarify your personal health goals, to identify the areas where you’re struggling, and to help motivate you to meet your goals.

THE HEALTH COACHING METHOD
The health coaching model includes the following process: 1.) establishing a good client relationship; 2.) motivational interviewing; 3.) creating a wellness vision; 4.) guiding the agenda and goal setting.
In order for health coaching to be successful, there must be a sense of trust between you and the health coach. Initial sessions focus on building this rapport. Next, the most introspective part of the process begins, with a communication strategy called motivational interviewing. In this process, you’re directed to explore and resolve any ambivalence that you might feel about your current health and the challenges that you perceive in trying to make lifestyle changes. By asking questions designed to help you examine yourself, the health coach helps you envision a better future, and build the motivation to achieve it. Ultimately, the strategy seeks to help you think constructively about your behavior and to consider the potential benefits of making a change.
This leads to step three: the creation of a wellness vision. This is a creative statement that we help you develop to reveal your highest potential. Wellness visions are not limited to the realm of physical health, but can extend to the emotional, social, spiritual and financial realms as well. This exercise draws extensively on the struggles and goals recognized during the motivational interview.
The final stage of health coaching is guiding the agenda and goal setting. This is a collaborative behavior change technique, where the health coach guides you toward the goals that you created during motivational interviewing. Sharing positive feedback, evaluating strengths and successes, and other focusing techniques and encouragement from the coach can help you move through any negative self-talk or other hurdles.
Health coaching is the bridge between medical practice and personal training, with part of both worlds mixed in. Today, when one in five people in the United States will die of a lifestyle-related disease, health coaching is a valuable resource for anyone looking to improve their overall health.
