WHAT IS NUTRITION PLANNING
A nutrition plan is a tool for managing your nutrient and caloric intake for the purpose of maintaining healthy living. A diet that produces noticeable results in one person can produce negligible results in another. One person’s nutritional requirements are not the same as another’s. This is where nutrition plans come in. Nutrition plans are specifically designed on a case by case basis, according to your particular physiological needs. The goal is to ensure that your body receives all of the nutrients it requires to function and remain healthy, while meeting another set of criteria. For some, this other criteria could involve staying within a daily caloric goal for the purpose of losing weight. For others, it could be the avoidance of certain foods because of a food allergy or disease.
However, you don’t need to have a specific reason to begin nutrition planning. Eating a healthy diet (and remember, a healthy diet is not the same for everyone!) is critical for maintaining physical fitness. A healthy diet will also lower your risk of heart disease and other conditions, and provide your body with essential nutrition: sufficient fluids, adequate amino acids from protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, fiber and adequate calories.
A healthy nutrition plan emphasizes vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat dairy products; includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts; limits saturated and trans fats, sodium, and added sugars; and controls portion sizes. A nutrition plan may also include prescriptions for how quickly or frequently you eat, and at which times of day. This may seem like a minor point, but studies have shown that eating habits such as these have a significant effect on weight gain or loss.
A licensed dietitian can work with you to create a nutrition plan suited to your body. Dietitians also provide dietary consulting to patients and their families to ensure that your nutritional needs are met at home.
